The Next Big Thing

I’ve been tagged by the redoubtable novelist Pam Fudge to blog the details of my work-in-progress for the on-line promotional event The Next Big Thing.

Here goes …

What is the working title of your book?

The Butterfly Collector.

Where did the idea for the book come from?

It was an amalgam of previous relationships, particularly the more volatile ones, that caused me some angst at the time.

What genre does your book fall under?

Gritty realism.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

What a dilemma! Someone did suggest Colin Farrell and Helena Bonham-Carter. Whoever gets the gig, they would need to be dark and brooding.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

When all that you have is never enough.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

The book will be available on Kindle and Amazon early in 2013.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

About eight-nine months. The finished product took seven rewrites and countless structural changes.

What other book would you compare this story to within your genre?

This is a bit off the wall but I often think of the doomed affair between Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

I’ve always been interested in the dynamics of human relationships, particularly between men and women. This was my attempt to highlight the tensions and disappointments, as well as the expectation and intensity that exists within these parameters.

What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?

Strong female characters (so I’ve been told).

So, there you have it, my first novel, soon to be unveiled! My thanks to Pam Fudge for handing the baton to me, and to all the budding novelists who’ve taken part in this ongoing venture.

The rules for engagement are fairly simple. You tag five other writers and give them the ten questions, which they can answer in any way they like.  I’m not sure if the writers I contacted will be participating so I don’t feel able to publish their names.
